Stonefly nymph,
type heavy
By Johan Sjunnestad
Here is a fly that Johan
Klingberg tied for us during one of our fishingclub evenings.
The fly is supposed to be effective for fishing in Baltak and
other streaming waters according to Johan, so why hesitate. Easy
to tie and a real treat for the fish.
SFS - Stonefly nymph type
heavy
Hook: streamer in size 6-8
Thread: black (strong)
Body: lead wire and chenille in a size 2-3
Tail: black rooster
Hackle: Black rooster
Head: black tungsten bead
Since I did not have a streamer
hook in a size 6 or 8, I used another hook model in a size
10, works probably as good. Put on a heavy tungsten bead, size
of your own choice, the bead on picture is a 2.5mm, but I've
also tied some heavier flies using 5mm bead. Wind lead wire on
body and wind the tying thread over the body to lock the head
and the lead wire. Apply instant glue on top so that everything
is “looked” where it should be.
Use a hackle feather, I take
mine from a ruffled Indian rooster, but works with almost
any kind. Cut the tip of the hackle as shown.
Attach the feather and pull the
stem until it just sticking out some fibers as a tail.
None of the stem should stick
out backwards, only feather fibers. Attach the feather so it
ends just behind the lead wire and there cut the feather. A
smoother body is obtained if the feather is continued to be
wound forward on the body.
Attach the chenillen where
feather ended and wind the thread back over the chenillen all
the way to the tail fibers, and then forward again.
Wind a body with chenillen,
wind a thicker thorax and then fit a hackle from the same rugged
Indian rooster neck. Wind the thread back over the thorax. Wind
the hackle back to the thread and attach the hackle behind the
thorax. Then wind the thread through the hackle carefully and
attach behind the head.
Finished fly ready to face
